John Ray Bruckart papers

Summary:John Ray Bruckart (1887-1979) worked for the United States Forest Service, serving as supervisor of the Willamette National Forest in Oregon from 1938 to 1954. Bruckart was an expert on Douglas fir silviculture and management. Collection includes personal correspondence and general correspondence, including several letters from Oregon Senator Wayne Morse. Also included in the collection are Bruckart's writings on such topics as Douglas fir silviculture, "The Rise of Bureaucracy," and "The Taming of a Forest," in addition to his memoirs. Collection also includes materials on the Willamette National Forest and the Three Sisters Wilderness Area; and several editions of Forest Service alumni newsletters.

Summary:Collection consists of correspondence and documents concerning a wide variety of regional and national activities and associations. Most relate to the promotion of commercial and human welfare, often in the area of conservation and social legislation. Of particular importance are the files related to timber as collateral, the Columbia Basin Inter-Agency Committee, and the National Reclamation Association. In most of the organizations represented in the files, Dana either held office or was consulted as an expert adviser.

This collection provides much needed insight into the economic, political, and social issues among these groups. Founded by Beverly Anne Brown in 1994, the center was headquartered in Sunny Valley, Oregon. The collection includes meeting materials and minutes, correspondence, forest product resources and information, published and unpublished manuscripts, interviews, photographs, and audio and video materials.
