Justus F. Krumbein was born near Hamburg, Germany in 1847. At fifteen, he studied architecture at the Hannover Polytechnic School, graduating in 1867 and immigrating to the United States two years later. After working in San Francisco for a short time, he moved to Portland, Oregon in 1871, establishing an architectural partnership first with contractor Elwood M. Burton, and later with W.G. Gilbert. During his career, he designed multiple well-known buildings throughout Oregon, including the Jacob Kammm House and the original Oregon State Capitol Building (which burned in 1935 and was replaced in 1936). Krumbein focused on Rchardsonian Romanesque style architecture, which can be found in his later designs of the Ancient Order of United Workmen Temple (1892), the Bickel Block (1883), and an exhibition hall at the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition. He died in 1907 at the age of sixty.

This collection contains a single portfolio of the architectural plans for the R. and I. Jacobs Building in Portland, Oregon. The building still stands at the corner of SW Third and SW Taylor Avenues.
