      <p>The first U of I Jazz Festival was held in 1967. In 1982 when Ella Fitzgerald first came to perform. Following that the Jazz Festival became a national event, in 1985 Lionel Hampton pledged his support. Now named the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, it is one of the largest jazz festivals in the world.</p>
