Arthur C. Jones was born in Oberlin Ohio, September 4, 1896. He received a BA from Pacific University (1921), and an MA in anatomy (1925) and MD (1926) from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. He entered private practice in Portland, Oregon, in 1927 and taught physical medicine as a volunteer faculty member at UOMS (1929-1969) and was a professor of anatomy at University of Oregon Medical School (1931-1940). He was awarded a scholarship to Northwestern University to attend the first course in physical medicine for physicians. After returning, Dean Dillehunt invited him to teach physical medicine, not yet a specialty, at UOMS. He opened the first and only physiatrist office in the state. Nationally known for his pioneer work in physical medicine and rehabilitation therapy, Dr. Jones was Medical Director and founder of the Rehabilitation Institute of Oregon. He was an organizer of the Oregon Chapter of the Arthritis and Rheumatism Foundation and consultant in physical medicine for the US Army in WWII (1942-1946), after having served a year in WWI. He headed the physical therapy department and the "fever therapy" department at Letterman General Hospital and organized an Army Rehabilitation Center in southern California. He was a charter diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine. Dr. Jones served as President of the American Congress of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and was a member of the Editorial Board of Archives of P.M.& R. He was named Doctor of the Year by the Multnomah County Medical Society and was given a degree of Humane Letters by Pacific University in 1963. Dr. Jones retired from practice in 1973 to travel with his wife Frieda. He died in 1983.
