Reid Eldo Wangsgaard was born in Lehi, Utah on October 6, 1916 to David and Eva W. Wangsgaard. Reid graduated from Ogden High School in 1933 and then attended Weber College. On December 7, 1935, he married Margaret Hickman, and they later had five children, Brent (1936), David (1939), James (1945), William (1947), and Kirk (?). After his marriage, Wangsgaard moved to Huntsville, Utah and farmed for two years. After his short farming venture, Wangsgaard moved to Logan, Utah to attend Utah State Agricultural College (now Utah State University). Shortly after moving to Logan, he found work as a partner in the Wangsgaard Heating & Appliance Company of Logan, later becoming the manager-owner. During the 1950s, Wangsgaard took an interest in local and state politics. In 1953 he was appointed to the Utah State Legislature by Gov. Bracken Lee and later served from 1953 to 1962 in the Utah House of Representatives as a Republican of the Second District, Cache County. After his second term expired, Wangsgaard remained active in Cache County politics and served as chairman of the Cache County Republican Party. During his life, Wangsgaard was a member of Logan's Rotary Club, the B.P.O.E. 1453, the Logan Golf & Country Club, and was a member of the Cache Chamber of Commerce. On June 21, 1972 Reid E. Wangsgaard died suddenly at age fifty-five in Logan.

This single-box collection contains the papers of Representative Reid E. Wangsgaard while he served in the Utah House of Representatives from 1953 to 1962. The materials in this collection consist of correspondence and political papers, which document Wangsgaard's work while serving as a representative and demonstrate how the residents of Cache Valley looked to him for political representation. Of special interest in this collection are the twenty-five telegrams sent by Cache Valley residents on December 16 and 17, 1953, asking Wangsgaard to veto Governor Lee's education bill, a bill which threatened funding for schools in Cache Valley (Folders 1 and 2). Much of the remaining correspondence in this collection also concerns educational issues. Another item of special interest in this collection is a petition containing the signatures of numerous members of the House of Representatives concerning House Bill 87 (anti-discrimination) being lifted from the Sifting Committee (Folder 18).

Folders 1—17 contain Wangsgaard's incoming correspondence.

Folders 18—23 contain papers concerning Wangsgaard's political activities.
