Biographical Sketch

A transplanted Brooklynite and alumnus of New York University, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League, Goodman (b. 1913) joined the Salt Lake City radio station KALL in 1947. A former staffer of The New York Post and WNYC radio in New York City, he soon became a stringer (regional correspondent) for Newsweek. While still working for KALL, he also became a travel writer for The New York Times and reporter for the Salt Lake Tribune-Telegram. During the 1950s he wrote two weekly columns for the Salt Lake Tribune,"Know Your Legislator" and "Nothing Serious." He continued his position as a stringer and prepared travel reviews for the Salt Lake Tribune that were then released to The New York Times. His career later took him into television (KUTV in Salt Lake City) and advertising. In the late 1960s he retired to devote his time to freelance writing. His efforts produced several books, many book reviews, newspaper feature stories, and magazine articles, including several stories for The Saturday Evening Post. In 1984 he came out of retirement, returning to The Salt Lake Tribune to write a weekly column, "City View." Access to "City View" and Goodman's other Salt Lake Tribune writings is available in the Western Americana Division of the Marriott Library.

    <scopecontent encodinganalog="description">

The Jack Goodman papers (1945-1996) contain articles, reviews, and research files. Included are drafts, final printed versions, notes and a variety of topical documents, including government publications, maps, travel information, clippings, and other materials. There are small amounts of personal and professional records, including contracts, correspondence, awards, and mementos. A significant portion of the files reflect Goodman's focus on Utah and the western United States. Goodman was interested in skiing, tourism, and the development of national parks. He also conducted research and wrote about significant events of various periods, such as the western uranium boom of the 1950s. Box 1 of the collection contains personal and business correspondence, contracts, mementos of family travels, and awards and notices from 1945-1995. Boxes 2-10 contain writings and associated research organized by date and subject. Box 2 houses material from the 1940s, boxes 3-5 contain those from the 1950s, boxes 6-8 hold files from the 1960s, and boxes 9 and 10, respectively, house those from the 1970s and 1980s-1990s. The first folder of each decade group contains general research material for that decade, and subsequent folders hold research and writings for specific topics of continued interest to Goodman. These topics include skiing, tourism, and the development of national parks. Articles and research pertaining to events of a particular decade follow. His weekly columns and freelance articles written for specific magazines, particularly Newsweek, comprise the remaining material for each decade group. Boxes 11 and 12 contain scrapbooks of Goodman's published articles from throughout his career. Box 13 contains books and pamphlets used in research, and box 14 contains a charcoal sketch of Fiorello LaGuardia, former mayor of New York City.
