        original diary kept by Patten during his journey from Denver to Virginia City and then to
        Salt Lake City, in 1863. The text describes travel incidents, Virginia City, Bannack, Salt
        Lake City, and Mormonism.</abstract>

      <head>Biographical Note</head>
      <p>F.E.W. Patten was born in Missouri and served in the Mexican American War. He moved to
        Denver, Colorado Territory in 1862 and again to Virginia City, Montana Territory, in 1863.
        After briefly working as a freighter, Patten established a general store at Virginia City in
        1864. He moved to Butte in 1881 where he worked in the insurance business. He married Mary
        A. Armstrong at St. Joseph, Missouri in 1872.</p>

      <p>Typewritten transcription of an original diary kept by Patten during his journey from
        Denver to Virginia City and then to Salt Lake City, in 1863. The location of the original
        diary is unknown but may be in the possession of descendants of Frances Patten. The text
        describes travel incidents, Virginia City, Bannack, Salt Lake City, and Mormonism. The
        manuscript is bound.</p>
