      <bioghist encodinganalog="5450_">
    
         <p>Leo Chandler Humphrey was born on September 28, 1895 in Charlemont, Massachusetts. He graduated from Montana State College in 1919 with a major in chemistry. He taught at the same school for two years, and then accepted his appointment as teaching fellow at the University of Minnesota for three years. He married Louise Forbes in 1921. He also did graduate work in organic chemistry at the University of Minnesota. He came to Whitman College in 1924 as Instructor in Chemistry and advanced to Professor of Chemistry. From 1934 to 1944 he served as Dean of Men. He died on March 9, 1960 in Walla Walla, Washington.</p>

         <p>The Leo Humphrey Papers consist of records from his time as a Ph.D. student in chemistry at the University of Minnesota, seminar and lecture notes for graduate coursework in chemistry, and notes on and reviews of academic articles. These papers, which date from 1915 through 1924, also contain notes for Ph.D. preliminary examinations, additional academic records, photographs, and a program commemorating 25 years of service as a faculty member at Whitman College.</p>
