The International Organization of Good Templars (IOGT) created as the Independent Order of Good Templars is a fraternal organization founded in 1851, Oriskany Falls (known then as Castor Hollow), New York, that follows the temperance movement that encourages people to abstain from alcohol and other drugs. It was originally named ‘the Independent Order of Good Templars’ upon founding. Its international body is Movendi International, with headquarters in Stockholm. Its structure of ritual and regalia was inspired by Freemasonry, and unlike other religious groups it did not discriminate based on gender or race. The organization is named after the Knights Templar, who were said in legend to drink sour milk as a crusade against the vice of alcohol. The group grew rapidly in North America, and grew internationally after 1868 when Joseph Malins (1844-1926) returned to England to establish a lodge in Birmingham. In the following three years, lodges were set up in Ireland, Wales, Australia, Malta, New Zealand, France, Portugal, South Africa, Bermuda, Belgium, and India. By 1906, the group changed the word ‘independent’ in its title to ‘international’ to reflect its growth. The group made several attempts to appear more modern in the 1970s by eliminating some use of rituals and regalia, changing ‘Order’ to ‘Organization’ in its title, changing the title of leadership from ‘Chief Templar’ to ‘President,’ and renaming ‘Lodges’ to ‘Chapters.’
