John Reese was born in New York in 1808, the son of Colonel John and Susannah Owen Reese. He was a grocer, freighter, trader, and early Nevada official and settler. The eastern Nevada mining district was called Reese River, first named by Captain J. H. Simpson in honor of Colonel John Reese, who first explored the area from Salt Lake City to Carson Valley in 1854.
The John Reese biography consist of an undated typescript biography of John Reese (b. 1808), a Nevada settler who played a prominent role in the government of that state. The biography describes Reese's adventures in settling the West and gives information about Nevada history in general.
