			<abstract encodinganalog="5203_">This collection is a <emph render="bold">sub-subgroup
					(Board)</emph> of the Montana Department of Labor and Industry records, RS 498.
				The Board of Abstracters formerly operated within the Department of Professional and
				Occupational Licensing (currently the Professional and Occupational Licensing Bureau
				within the Department of Labor and Industry), but was repealed by Montana law in

					Department of Labor and Industry records</extref>. Records of the Board of
				Abstracters consist of minutes, an operational file, a complaint file, and case
				files of several court cases involving title companies. </abstract>

			<head>Historical Note</head>
			<p>The Montana Board of Abstract Examiners was established in 1931 to regulate the
				practice of title abstracting. The Board was also known as the Abstracters Board of
				Examiners. In 1972, it was renamed the Montana Board of Abstracters and operated
				within the Department of Professional and Occupational Licensing. According to
				Montana Code Annotated 37-52-201, the Board of Abstracters was repealed in 1981.</p>

				file (1975-1979); and case files (1975-1978) of several court cases involving title
				companies.</p>

			<p>In 2024, the various collections of the Montana Department of Labor and Industry were
				integrated under one collection identifier, RS 498, in order to help facilitate
				access, reduce redundancy in the Montana Historical Society Library &amp; Archives
				catalog, and to follow best archival practices.</p>
			<p>Collections from Montana Department of Labor and Industry's various Divisions and
				Bureaus that were previously treated as separate entities are now integrated into
					<emph render="bold">this collection, RS 498</emph>. Rather than reprocessing
				over 20 linear feet of DLI materials, MTHS staff decided to keep the past
				arrangement of those collections/finding aids and provide access to them via links
				in the primary finding aid. This decision has allowed the MTHS archival staff to
				maintain intellectual control over the collection, while removing the need to
				reprocess it. It also keeps State Agency finding aids at manageable sizes. Please
				read the scope and content note carefully to determine if this subgroup/sub-subgroup
				pertains to your research needs. </p>
