The turkey industry in McMinnville, Yamhill County, Oregon grew from the late 1930s to the 1960s and dramatically increased from the 1970s to the mid-1980s. Competition from turkey breeders in California and the Midwest, along with a recall of tainted turkeys at a plant near Salem, Oregon, caused the industry to disappear by the end of the 1980s. In 1986, Yamhill County accounted for more than 90 percent of Oregon’s turkey industry.

A festival celebrating the turkey industry of Yamhill County, the Pacific Coast Turkey Exhibit, began in McMinnville in 1938. The festival was renamed to the Turkey Rama in 1961. Turkey Rama continues to this day, celebrating the turkey industry of the past with a barbecue, dances, a car show, and many other festivities.
