The Hubert Adams Scrapbook of Taiwan under Japanese Occupation consists of 80 photographs,
most of which are 4" by 6". The photographs depict numerous scenes from Taiwan,
including notable buildings, rituals, and economic activities. Buildings include
shrines, government buildings, and public works. Rituals include both religious and
state ceremonies. Economic activies include farming, lumbering, and fishing. In
addition, the album contains a series of photographs depicting an indigenous
Taiwanese group. While the provenance of the scrapbook is unknown prior to its
acquisition by Hubert Adams, most photographs include an individual seen seated
sixth from the right in the front row of the 8" x 10" photograph mounted on the
first page of the scrapbook, who appears to be an official of some sort. Each photograph is labeled in Japanese. >
