Nicholas D'Arcy of Ballinlass (1801-1868) was born in the County of Roscommon, Ireland to Anthony D'Arcy (-1815) and Clara Rosetta Kelly (-1823), heiress of Ballyforan. He married Teresa Burke of Springfield, County of Tipperary, and they had six children. One of his sons, Martin Valentine D'Arcy, lived from 1845-1917 and married Madoline Mary Keegan (1855-1935). Another son, Anthony Martin D'Arcy (1838-1914) married Mary Lalor, and emigrated to the United States.

In 1823 D'Arcy inherited Ballyforan from his mother upon her death; however, he sold Ballyforan back to the Kellys circa 1851. D'Arcy's estate also included lands in the counties of Roscommon and Galway, which he sold in a public auction in 1851, 1852 and 1853. He briefly ran a hotel in Dublin and then retired to London where he died in 1868.

This collection consists of maps, marriage documents, genealogical notes, and other documents relating to Nicholas D'Arcy's estate in the counties of Galway and Roscommon, Ireland. The maps depict portions of the estate of Nicholas D'Arcy comprising Kelly's Grove or Eskermore, Dereen, Ballyforan, Carriganmore, and Tinageeragh. Several maps were surveyed by John Kelly, C. E. and Surveyor for the County of Roscommon. The collection also includes a manuscript map on vellum dating from April 18, 1791 of the estate of the Right Honorable Charles Lord Viscount Dillon and Simon John Dowell Esquire, as well as a portion belonging to Nicholas D'Arcy's great-grandparents, Hugh Kelly Esquire and Mary (Daly) Kelly. This estate was inherited by the D'Arcy family, and eventually passed down to Nicholas D'Arcy.

The marriage documents relate to family members of Nicholas D'Arcy, including an intermarriage agreement between his great-grandparents, Hugh Kelly and Mary (Daly) Kelly, and the marriage articles of his parents, Anthony D'Arcy and Clara Rosetta Kelly. Materials concerning the D'Arcy estate include a Copy Statement of Owner's Title and a Schedule of Deeds and Documents. There are Instructions to Counsel Nicholas D'Arcy on money lent to him from the Norwich Insurance Company, which also include D'Arcy's response to the company.

The collection also includes notes regarding a legal dispute, and supporting documentation (an item list and genealogical notes recorded at the time the collection was donated).
