    <bioghist encodinganalog="545">
      <p>Charles Luther Kirtley was born in 1873.</p>
      <p>He joined the first University of Idaho football team (1893) as a half-back, and continued playing football throughout his education. Charles also participated in track and field. He placed first and second during the 1893 Intercollegiate Field Day event. </p>
      <p>Charles graduated from the university in 1896, a member of the first ever graduating class. Following his graduation from U of I, he enrolled in Rush Medical school where he finished in 1901. He then completed an internship in Portland, Oregon before eventually settling in Challis, Idaho. Here he was a practicing physician and for most of his life was one of the only doctors serving the rural community. He revisited the U of I campus in 1934.</p>
      <p>Charles Luther Kirtley died in 1938 in Challis, Idaho.</p>

      <p>Charles Luther Kirtley was a member of the first graduating class at the University of Idaho in 1893. He participated in campus athletics ranging from football to track and field. </p>
      <p>This collection contains five of his track and field prize ribbons. Most of them are from 1893, while one is from 1895.</p>
