Fred Schmidt (1915-1991) received the B.S. degree in Engineering
Physics from the University of Michigan in 1937. After two years with AT&T,
he returned to graduate study and obtained the M.A. degree in Physics from the
University of Buffalo in 1940, and the Ph.D. in Physics from the University of
California-Berkeley in 1945. While at Berkeley, Schmidt worked on the 37 and 60
inch cyclotrons. From 1941 to mid-1945 he worked on the Manhattan Project in
Berkeley, Oak Ridge (Tennessee), and Los Alamos (New Mexico). In 1945, he
returned to Berkeley to assist in building the first synchrocyclotron. In 1946,
Schmidt became a Professor of Physics at the University of Washington, where he
worked in the Nuclear Physics Laboratory. Schmidt was the recipient of a
Guggenheim Fellowship (1956-1957), a National Science Foundation postdoctoral
fellowship (1963-1964), and was a Fellow of the American Physical Society. His
research interests were in experimental nuclear physics and elementary particle
physics. Schmidt was also very interested in energy policy, and was an
outspoken advocate of nuclear power. In 1976, he co-authored "The Energy
Controversy: The Fight Over Nuclear Power", with David Bodansky. He remained a
member of teh faculty of the University of Washington Physics Department until
his death.
