Modern Printing Company was a printing company owned and operated by the Bress family in Laramie, Wyoming. The company was founded as Mountain States Lithographing in 1937 by Chuck Street. The printing plant was destroyed in the Holliday Fire of 1948 in downtown Laramie. Howard Rhodes joined the business in 1950 and helped the company recover from the fire and grow into a regional printer. In 1957, Mountain States Lithographing purchased Ace Printing Company in Casper, Wyoming. Mountain States Lithographing maintained both printing plants until 1972, when Wayne and Connie Bress purchased the Laramie business and renamed it Modern Printing Company. The Bress family has owned and operated the business in Laramie, Wyoming for over 50 years, providing most of Laramie’s printing needs, including the University of Wyoming (i.e., sports programs, publications, posters, flyers, newsletters, local business cards and stationery, etc.). In January of 2022 the production facility was closed due to rising costs to keep and maintain equipment, however the business still exists operating as a print brokerage firm.
Collection contains the business records for Modern Printing Company in Laramie, Wyoming. Included in the collection are job tickets of proofs and samples from Modern Printing Company and Mountain States Lithographing Company, job register ledgers, images of the buildings, offices, and equipment before closing, and records regarding the purchase and operations of Ace Printing Company in Casper.
