         <p>Portions of the collection were donated to the Whitman College and Northwest Archives by Ann Lomen Sandstrom in 2005. The accession number associated with this donation is retro-0129. For additional materials in the collection, provenance is unknown.</p>

         <p>Lucile Lomen was born on August 21, 1920. She was a member of the class of 1941 at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. She was a law clerk for Justice William O. Douglas before becoming the first woman to clerk at the Supreme Court of the United States in 1944. She died on June 21, 1996 in King, Washington.</p>

         <p>The Lucile Lomen Collection consists of both personal and Whitman College Alumni Association correspondence of Lucile Lomen. This collection, which dates from 1944 through 1999, also includes newspaper clippings, letters, and articles about the life of Willliam O. Douglas, his tenure at the Supreme Court, and his memorial service.</p>
