		  Nitinaht (Ditidaht) language</abstract></did><bioghist encodinganalog="5450_"><p>A native speaker of Nitinaht (Ditidaht), Mr. John Tl’ishal Thomas, has
		  collaborated with several of the linguists working on the language, including
		  Dr. Thomas Hess. </p><p>During the period from May 1979 to April 1980 John Tl’ishal Thomas
		  carried out research on his native language, Nitinaht. The cassette tape
		  recordings derived from his research largely consist of traditional Nitinaht
		  stories. Nearly all of this was obtained from his mother, Ida Jones, and
		  stepfather, Charlie Jones, of Port Renfrew, British Columbia. </p></bioghist><scopecontent><p>Tape recordings and field notes on Nitinaht language, 1979-1980.</p></scopecontent><odd encodinganalog="500" id="a5" type="hist"><p>Nitinaht is an Indian language of Western Canada spoken along the
		  southwestern littoral of Vancouver Island from Pachena Point to Jordan River.
		  It is related to several other coastal languages which together comprise the
		  Wakashan Language Family. </p><p>In October, 1984 the Nuuchanuulth Tribal Council meeting at Tin-wis
		  near Tofino, B.C. proclaimed that the language and people previously known as
		  Nitinaht be called henceforth Ditidaht. The name Ditidaht more closely
		  approximates the name as the Native people say it when speaking in their own
		  language. However, this grammar was prepared several years before the change
