The first Hebrew Benevolent Association of Helena, Montana Territory, was organized
December 3, 1866. The association listed 64 members by 1867; its officers that year were Sol
Star, G. Goldberg, Isaac Haas, and Louis Gans. The association operated under a published
constitution and bylaws which pledged the group to "...relieve the distressed and support
the afflicted, attend the sick and bury the dead." The name, Hebrew Benevolent Society, was
used informally by the members when referring to the association. Other names for the group
included United Hebrew Benevolent Association (1890s-1906), First Jewish Benevolent and
Cemetery Association (1907-1920s), and Home of Peace Cemetery Association (1929-1943).
