Biography of Ake Hultkrantz

Ake Hultkrantz was an anthropologist known for his work on Native American religions and shamanism. He was born in Kalmar, Sweden on April 1, 1920. Hultkrantz attended the University of Stockholm, graduating with a PhD in ethnology in 1946 and a second PhD in comparative religion in 1953. He taught at the University of Stockholm from 1953 until his retirement. From 1948-1958, Hultkrantz conducted field work at the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming researching the religion and folklore of the Shoshone (who adopted Ake in 1948) and Arapaho tribes. He is also known for his work with many California and other Northern Plains tribes in the United States. Ake Hultkrantz published around 400 papers and 25 books on the subject. He died on October 3, 2006.

The American Heritage Center aspires to approach all areas of our work in ways that are
respectful to those who create, use, and are represented in our collections. For a variety of
reasons, however, users may encounter offensive or harmful language or images in some of our
