		  papers, souveniors, reminiscences, genealogies and photographs of Avard and
		  related families, documenting their early years in California, homesteading
		  efforts on the Colville Indian Reservation, railroading in north Idaho, and
		  other aspects of frontier life in the far west.</abstract>

      <p>The Stephen Avard papers consist of correspondence, business papers,
		  legal documents, souvenirs, reminiscences and photographs concerning Stephen
		  Thomas Avard (1880-1951), his brother Charles William Avard (ca. 1875-1956),
		  his wife Julia Hamaker Eastman Avard (1911-1956), his mother-in-law Sarah
		  Phillips Hamaker Simonton (ca. 1840-ca. 1925), and his wife's step-father
		  Rolvin David Simonton (1843-1915). The papers document the Avard's emigration
		  from England to California in the 1880's, their homesteading efforts at
		  Nespelem on the Colville Indian Reservation in northeast Washington; Rolvin
		  Simonton's work on railroads in northern Idaho and other aspects of frontier
		  life in the far west. </p>
