Biographical Note

Founded in 1920 by Emily Hard, a Spokane school teacher, the Greenacres Woman’s Club was a
social organization that sought “to stimulate intellectual, moral, and civic development and
to promote good fellowship.” At the first meeting at Hard’s home on December 3, 1920,
thirty-six women signed the club’s first constitution and by-laws. The Greenacres Woman’s
Club was a member of the Washington State Federation of Women’s Clubs from 1924-1941. The
motto of the club, “The Noblest Motive is the Public Good,” was evidenced by the club’s
support of a variety of community organizations, such as the school library and kitchen, the
Camp Fire Group, and the veterans at the VA Hospital.
