         <p>Vance J. Hoyt (1889-1967) was born in Arkansas City, Kansas and educated at the College of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, and at Pacific Medical College. He was a practicing physician from 1916-1932. </p>
         <p>Hoyt was also an amateur naturalist. He wrote nature columns for multiple Los Angeles area newspapers. He also wrote novels. He authored and was the technical director of the motion picture, Sequoia (1935), and wrote free-lance articles for a variety of magazines. </p>

         <p>The collection (1913-1965) contains manuscripts of radio, and motion picture scripts, and articles, correspondence, copies of published works, scrapbooks, and photographs. </p>
         <p>The correspondence is organized alphabetically by name or title. Correspondents include Hamlin Garland, Rupert Hughes, Ronald Reagan, Jim Tully, and John R. White.</p>
         <p>Manuscripts include book-length, short pieces, radio scripts, and motion picture scripts and synopses. Some titles contain research material, correspondence, and photographs. Radio scripts were written for the Chaparral Club programs on nature and conservation subjects.  The motion picture writings include The Courage of Lassie. </p>
         <p>Published works consist of books and magazine articles organized by title, and include date and publishing information. </p>
         <p>Scrapbooks contain reviews, articles, photographs, mementos about Hoyt's published works, including the books Bar-Rac and Silver Boy, and the book and subsequent film, Sequoia.</p>
         <p>The photograph series contains prints and albums. Subjects include aeronautics, western scenes and characters, the Mexican Revolution of 1910, and portraits of boxers particularly Bob Fitzsimmons, Buckskin Joe (Edward Jonathan Hoyt), Battling Nelson, and the Fitzsimmons-Long fight in Australia.  </p>
