The Bingham Mine is an open-pit mining operation, that largely extracts copper from the Oquirrh Mountains, southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. The mine is owned by Rio Tinto and operated through the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation. It is one of the world's largest man-made excavations and among the deepest open-pit copper mines. The Bingham Mine formerly included a town—Bingham Canyon, Utah—founded in 1904 to support the community forming around the mine. However, in the mid-twentieth century, Kennecott Copper Corporation was purchasing large tracts of land within the town to expand mining operations. By 1971, much of the town was purchased by Kennecott Copper, and most of the city's population had moved to other locales, including neighboring Copperton. On November 22, 1971, Bingham Canyon, Utah was officially disincorporated, and most of the town was delomished in the following years.
