            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Emily Robinson Meredith was born in Maryland in 1836. She married Fredrick A.
                Meredith and moved with him to Bannack, Montana Territory, in 1863. The couple later
                settled in Bozeman where they had two children, Ellis, born in 1865, and Evan, born
                in 1866. Emily later became a suffragette, as did her daughter Ellis who pursued a
                career as a journalist in Denver, Colorado.</p>

            <p>The collection consists of a typed transcript of a letter from Emily (April 30, 1863)
                to her father describing living conditions in Bannack and two photographs taken in
                Bozeman in 1868 of Ellis and Evan Meredith. The original letter from Meredith is
                held by the Montana Historical Society in Helena and is part of their Small
                Collection 288, <emph render="italic">Emily R. Meredith papers,
                1862-1867</emph>.</p>

            <p>A typed transcription of an original letter by Emily Meredith and two carte-de-visite
                portraits of her children were donated to Montana State University by Ellis Meredith
                of Washington, D.C. in August, 1920. </p>
