The original copy of the diary remains with descendnats of George William MacKnight. At the time of the donation to Albertsons Library, the diary was held by a cousin of the donor.

Photocopy of a handwritten diary (entitled "Rough Log") of MacKnight's naval service and wartime experiences aboard the U.S.S. Oregon during the Spanish American War, sailing from San Francisco to Cuba, then back to San Francisco, March 19, 1898-February 26, 1899.
George William MacKnight was born in Canada in 1881, the son of George Reuben and Eva MacKnight (the name is spelled McKnight on the birth record). During his naval service, MacKnight served first as a cabin boy and then as a full-fledged sailor. After his naval service he lived mainly in California, marrying Ellen Maude Snyder in 1903. George William MacKnight died in 1950 in Paradise Park, Santa Cruz County, California, and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose.
