Sigma Xi was founded in 1886 at Cornell University. Sigma Xi was founded to promote and reward excellence in scientific research. Today Sigma Xi has nearly 60,000 members and over 500 chapters internationally. The University of Idaho Chapter of Sigma Xi was chartered in 1922 and is still functioning today.

This collection contains materials from the University of Idaho chapter of Sigma XI as well as materials regarding Sigma XI as a whole. Materials included in this collection mostly consist of books containing the history of Sigma Xi, financial statements, checks, and University of Idaho Chapter membership information.
Materials were donated by Joan Parkison of Sigma Xi Universtiy of Idaho on 27 March 1987.
