            <head>Biography of Clarence T. Tolpo</head><p>Clarence T. Tolpo was an early United States Army aviator who flew for the U.S. Postal Service starting in 1924. He received a public service award from the Postmaster General in 1928. He later became employed by U.S. Bureau of Air Commerce and the Airways Operations Division of the Civil Aeronautics Administration. He took part in establishing the first air traffic control system in the U.S. and later became airport manager for airports across the U.S. He became a member of the Air Mail Pioneers.</p>

            <head>Scope and Content</head><p>The collection contains correspondence regarding Tolpo’s career, tourist travel to the country of Colombia, and about the Air Mail Pioneers (1927-1969); newsletters of the Thompson Aeronautical Corporation (1929-1932); news articles of early aviation-related events in a scrapbook; a copy of <emph>The AuSable News</emph> (1928) containing an article about air mail coming to Michigan; a pamphlet titled “A New Chapter in Transportation Progress: The Packard Diesel Aircraft Engine” (1930) published by the Packard Motor Car Company; transcript of a short interview with Tolpo about his work as acting manager of the Cleveland Airway Traffic Control department of the U.S. Bureau of Air Commerce (1937); an air navigation program plan for Tolpo to be a Civil Aviation Consultant to the Government of Colombia under the Cultural Cooperation Program (1949); and certificates from the U.S. Army and postal service (1922-1928). There are scrapbook pages with photographs and memorabilia from Tolpo’s career, including photos of Thompson Aeronautical Corp. officers and directors, airports and military air fields in Michigan, Air Mail Pioneer groups, and photos of Tolpo. Additionally, there is a painted portrait of Tolpo.</p>
