Don James was the UW football team's head coach from 1975 through 1992. James was born Dec. 31, 1932 in Massillon, Ohio, and graduated from Massillon's Washington High School in 1950. He played quarterback at the University of Miami (Florida), graduating in 1954 with a degree in education. James then served in the US Army for two years before resuming his studies at the University of Kansas and doubling as the Jayhawks' freshman football coach, graduating in 1957 with a master's degree in education. James went on to coach football at Southwest Miami High School for two years, followed by terms as assistant coach at Florida State (1956-65), Michigan (1966-67) and Colorado (1968-70), and as head coach at Kent State (1971-1974). James became head coach for the University of Washington football team in 1975, serving in that role until his retirement in 1993. In his time at the UW, James had a record of 153-57-2, was president of the American Football Coaches Association in 1989 and was named national college coach of the year in 1984 and 1991. James was inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame in 1993 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997. Don James passed away on October 20, 2013.
