               (Executive Orders)</emph> of the Montana Office of the Governor records. Executive
            Orders are issued by the Montana Governor, who runs the Executive Office. Please see the

               Governor records</extref>. These records (1971-2004) consist of executive orders
            issued by sitting Governors. There may be some gaps in the earlier years. To see recent

         <p>The Montana Governor is the chief executive officer of the State of Montana. During the
            territorial period, 1864-1889, the Governor was appointed by the President of the United
            States. Since statehood the Governor has been elected in statewide election.</p>
         <p> The duties of the office were established in the 1889 Constitution. These duties
            included overall administration of state government; serving on various boards,
            including the Board of Prison Commissioners, the Board of Examiners, and others;
            convening special sessions as needed; signing or vetoing legislation passed by the
            Legislative Assembly; receiving regular reports from departments of the executive
            branch; appointing non-elective officials of state government and appointing
            replacements when elected officials die in office; granting pardons and commutations of
            sentence; and being the official representative of the state in its relations with the
            United States and other state governments.</p>

         <p>These records of the Montana Governor's Office consist of executive orders from the
            Governor. The bulk of the orders are from 1981 through 2004 and include a contents sheet
            for each year. Also included are a few scattered orders from 1971 through 1979.</p>

         <p>Researchers must use collection in accordance with the policies of the Montana
            Historical Society. The Society does not necessarily hold copyright to all materials in
            the collection. In some cases permission for use may require additional authorization

         <p>In 2024, the various collections of the Montana Office of the Governor were integrated
            under one collection identifier, RS 502, in order to help facilitate access, reduce
            redundancy in the MTHS catalog, and to follow best archival practices.</p>
         <p>Collections from the Montana Office of the Governor's various Offices and Programs that
            were previously treated as separate entities are now integrated into <emph render="bold">this collection, RS 502.</emph> Rather than reprocessing over 15 linear feet of
            Governor's materials, MTHS staff decided to keep the past arrangement of those
            collections/finding aids, and provide access to them via links through the central finding
            aid. This decision has allowed the MTHS archival staff to maintain intellectual control over
            the collection, while removing the need to reprocess it. It also keeps State Agency finding
            aids at manageable sizes. Please read the scope and content note carefully to determine if
            this subgroup/sub-subgroup pertains to your research needs.</p>
