Alice Lovina Manning (1877-1944) was born on 6 July 1877 in Burr Oak, Iowa. In 1891 she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, with her family. She graduated from the University of Utah in 1897 and was a teacher until 1906, when she took a job as secretary to the general attorney of the Oregon Short Line Railroad Company. After studying law for six years under the instruction of the general attorney for the Union Pacific, she became the chief clerk of the legal department for the Union Pacific system at Salt Lake City. She worked for the Union Pacific for a number of years before attaining her law degree. In 1923 Manning was honored as the fourth woman to be admitted into the Utah bar. She died in Chicago, Illinois, on 31 July 1944.
The Alice Lovina Manning papers (1883-1949) contain a paper written by Manning on women's rights in Utah, correspondence, newspaper clippings, a family history, report cards, and a biography.
