The Independent Order of Good Templars originated in the 19th century and is a fraternal organization which promotes abstinence from alcohol and other drugs.

This collection consists of the "clearance card" of Elizabeth Gale certifying that she is a fully paid member of the Puyallup Lodge Number 20 of the Independent Order of Good Templars, Franklin, Washington Territory. It is dated 1868 July 30 and indicates that Ms. Galy became a member on 1867 September 5.
