William Wallace McCrackin came to Sand Coulee, Montana with his wife Gertrude in 1877 to
raise sheep. Two years later he would begin his banking career in Butte working for William
A. Clark. Soon, McCrackin would move up the corporate ladder, becoming President of the
Silver Bow National Bank, established in 1890. In 1894, McCrackin moved his family to
Hamilton to take a position as director of Marcus Dalys Ravalli County bank. William would
eventually become mayor of this city, where he lived until his death in 1913. Due to his
importance in the history of Montana, he was honored in 1943 with the naming of a Liberty
ship.
