         <p>Mary Carr Moore was born on August 6, 1873 in Memphis Tennessee. She studied music in San Francisco and began teaching and composing in 1889. In 1894 she was the lead in an operetta, "The Oracle." After moving to Seattle in 1901, Moore wrote a four-act grand opera titled "The Cost of Empire." In 1926, she moved to Los Angeles and taught at Chapman College and Ola Steeb Piano School. Moore died on January 9, 1957.</p>

         <p>The Mary Carr Moore Papers, which dates from 1911 to 1986, contains materials related to Mary Carr Moore. The collection consists of materials related to Moore's opera "The Cost of Empire," also known as "Narcissa," whis is about the story of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman. Materials include correspondence, newspaper clippings, programs, a catalog of some of the published songs, operas, orchestral scores, solos and chamber works.</p>
