<p>Located on the Piedras River in Chihuahua, Mexico, Colonia Juarez was settled in 1885 by one of the several groups of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints settlers in Mexico that were fleeing prosecution by the United States government for their polygamist practices. The settlers at first rented land from the Mexicans until a new site could be purchased two miles from the original location, which was dedicated in 1887.</p>
<p> Miles Park Romney, the son of the master carpenter Miles Romney of St. George, Utah, relocated his family to Colonia Juarez in 1886 after he was pursued by the United States Marshals for practicing plural marriage. His son, Miles Archibald, was only sixteen at the time and played a large part in getting his family through the rough terrain, Indian country, and snow storms of Arizona and Old Mexico to Colonia Juarez where his father had gone to ready a place for them. Miles A. Romney became quite prominent in Colonia Juarez as he was a successful builder, contractor, and trader. A portion of the family still lives in the small town in the Piedras Verdes Valley.</p>

<p>This collection contains the biographies and memoirs of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints settlers in Colonia Juarez, Mexico. The papers are largely related to the Miles Park Romney family, which migrated to Juarez in 1886 and would be of interest to anyone interested in the settlement of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pioneers in Mexico. The manuscripts are housed in one box containing 15 folders of biographical sketches and memoirs that were assembled by Miles A. Romney's grandchildren, mainly by Elizabeth Romney Madsen, who used them for her privately published book entitled <emph render="italic"> Memories of Mexico </emph>. Several of the documents include handwritten corrections that eventually became part of Madsen's book.</p>
