Leo Spitzer, born in Vienna in 1887, began his academic career in his
native city. He had a rather distinguished career at the Universities of
Vienna, Bonn, Marburg, and Cologne. In 1933, he emigrated from Nazi Germany and
took up a post at the University of Istanbul, and from 1936 to 1956 was a
professor at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. It is there that he
became a member of the Romance Language faculty and stayed for the rest of his
career. His principal works dealt with the literary stylistics of Romance
languages, particularly French and Spanish; he also did research in various
areas of Romance linguistics. Professor Spitzer died in Forte dei Marmi, Italy
in 1960.
