Richard Hugo was born December 21, 1923 in Seattle and was raised in
White Center, a working class district of Seattle. Hugo lived with his
grandparents for most of his childhood and early adult life. He served as a
bombardier in Italy during World War II. Following the war, Hugo attended the
University of Washington, where he studied writing with Theodore Roethke. He
earned a BA in 1948 and a MA in 1952. In 1959 Hugo, along with Carolyn Kizer,
Earl Pritchard and Nelson Bentley, founded the literary magazine
Poetry Northwest.
While continuing to write poetry, Hugo supported himself for 13 years
by working for the Boeing Aircraft Company in various jobs, including that of a
technical writer. In 1963 he left Boeing to revisit Italy. He returned to the
United States in 1964 to accept a teaching position at the University of
Montana, where he became Director of the Creative Writing Program in 1971, and
where he continued to teach until his death.
During the last two decades of his life, Hugo's reputation as a writer
grew with the publication of nine collections of poetry, three chapbooks, a
collection of essays and a detective novel. He was twice nominated for the
National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. In 1968, the Rockefeller Foundation
awarded him a traveling grant which allowed him to revisit Italy. In 1976 he
was appointed editor of the Yale Younger Poets Series. In 1977 Hugo received a
Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, which allowed him to live in Scotland from
1977-1978. At various times he was a guest lecturer at the University of Iowa,
University of Arkansas, University of Colorado, and University of Washington.
Hugo survived the loss of a lung to cancer in 1980, but died of leukemia in
Seattle on October 22, 1982.
Posthumous publications of Hugo's work include a chapbook,
Sea Lanes Out; collected poems,
Making Certain It Goes On; and a
collection of autobiographical essays,
The Real West Marginal Way.

Accession No. 3655-001: Richard Hugo papers, 1942-1983 (bulk 1973-1982)11.08 cubic feet (21 boxes plus film, videotape, audiocassette, and 1
oversized vertical file)
Scope and Content: Correspondence, notebooks, literary manuscripts, publications,
photographs, personal documents, film.
This accession mainly reflects the later period of Hugo's career,
from the 1970s through 1982. Acquired from Hugo's widow, Ripley Hugo, it also
includes publications and plaques acquired from her subsequently, typescripts
and galleys from publisher W.W. Norton and correspondence photocopied from
originals lent by Norton. Some of the outgoing letters are originals which were
donated by their recipients. The poetry notebooks are undated, but cover the
later period of Hugo's career; Ripley Hugo attempted to assign approximate
dates to some of them.
The Poetry Collections series consists mainly of typescripts or
galleys of Hugo's published collections. An unpublished "New Book," however,
consists of typed drafts of poems, some of which show minor revisions and some
of which never appeared in book form.
The Publications series consists of many, though not all, of the
periodicals and a few monographs in which Hugo's poems and other writings
appeared. The annotated books represent only a small part of his library.
The Yale Younger Poets series represents Hugo's work as editor of
that series from 1977 to 1982. He selected the winner of the competition each
year and wrote an introduction to the winner's book. The bulk of the series
consists of drafts of Hugo's introductions.
The Ripley Hugo series is primarily papers of his widow concerning
Hugo's posthumous publications.
Terminology:
uncut printings of a publication, with page breaks not
made, which may show author's corrections facsimiles of pages as they will appear in
publicationprinted or typed version, copy-edited with instructions
for the printer
Arrangement: The original order of the correspondence in the University of
Washington's collection was retained whenever an order was apparent, hence
General Correspondence and Outgoing Letters are arranged chronologically while
Incoming Letters are alphabetical. Poetry drafts are arranged in alphabetical
order by the title of the poem as it was eventually published, with previous
titles indicated in parentheses. Untitled poems were listed by first line. Many
of the drafts were found folded inside the notebooks and some were in unrelated
files; these have been incorporated into the order described. The material in
the Poetry Collections series had been arranged and listed alphabetically since
there was no apparent original order. Essays were arranged in the order they
appeared in Hugo's two published collections, listed by published title. All
versions were brought together although early versions sometimes differ
considerably. Fragments remain because it was not always possible to piece
together drafts. Preliminary or alternative titles of essays are indicated in
parentheses. In the Yale Younger Poets series, the drafts of Hugo's
introductions to the winners' books and related papers are grouped for each
publication in the series, in the order that they were published.
Restrictions on Access: Certain series in the Hugo papers were closed or subject to
restrictions on their use at the time of microfilming.
Rrestricted material was filmed on separate reels which will not
be circulated until such time as each restriction is lifted or the material is
opened for research use. The restricted material is listed on the inventory in
sequence with the rest of the papers.
Acquisition Info: The bulk of the Richard Hugo papers were purchased from Ripley
Hugo and were received in July 1985. Publications, plaques and additional
material were added by Ripley Hugo in December 1985. Typescripts and galleys of
Making Certain It Goes On and
The Real West Marginal Way were
received from W.W. Norton in January 1986. Norton also loaned their
correspondence with Hugo for photocopying.
Separated Material: Box 21 containing material from the University of Montana
(Missoula) Creative Writing Program under Hugo's direction was transferred to
the University of Montana Archives, January 2019.
Processing Info: Processing completed in 1985-1986.
This accession is a merger of Accession Nos. 3655-001, 3655-002,
3655-003 and 3655-004.

Scope and Content: Microfilmed literary manuscripts, poetry notebooks,
correspondence, publications, photographs, personal documents.
This microfilm contains material from the University of Washington
Libraries Special Collections and from the University of Montana Mansfield
Library. The University of Washington materials consist of nearly all of
Accession No. 3655-001, described above. The films also include 17 notebooks
borrowed from the University of Montana. The notebooks from the University of
Montana's collection are undated but are Hugo's earliest, beginning with class
notes from his student days at the University of Washington. In addition to the
notebooks, the University of Montana loaned 18 loose pages of literary
manuscripts (an essay and several drafts of a poem).
See note in accession 3655-001 for an explanation of terms used to
describe different types of drafts or copies of works.
Arrangement: The notebooks from the University of Montana's collection are
numbered 1 through 15; two are unnumbered. Though their order is thought to
have been established by Hugo when he donated them, the notebooks may not be in
correct chronological sequence.
As the inventory to the microfilm generally follows the inventory
to the Hugo papers in Accession No. 3655-001, the entire inventory is not
repeated here. The following inventory lists only the University of Montana
materials, which are not part of Accession No. 3655-001. University of Montana
papers were added to the inventory and filmed preceding their University of
Washington counterparts. A detailed inventory to the microfilms is available in
Special Collections. All of the University of Montana materials have been noted
as such on the inventory and identified as such on film. All other filmed
materials are from the University of Washington Libraries.
Restrictions on Access: All restricted material was filmed on separate reels which will
not be circulated until such time as each restriction is lifted or the material
is opened for research use. The restricted material is listed on the inventory
in sequence with the rest of the papers.
Processing Info: Filmed in April 1988 by Alpha Information Management .
The papers filmed from the University of Washington were processed
in 1985 and 1986.
For the purpose of the microfilm edition, the archives at the
University of Montana Mansfield Library loaned Richard Hugo papers from its
collection. These consisted of 17 notebooks and several literary manuscripts
which were donated to the University archives by Hugo in 1968. The University
archives staff chose to leave loose manuscript pages in place in the Hugo
notebooks, and these pages were filmed in the order that they appear in the
notebooks.
Certain categories of material in the Richard Hugo papers
(Accession No. 3655-001) were omitted from the microfilm. These include:
galleys, page proofs and printer's copies of Hugo's
booksunedited typescripts of Hugo's books which appear to be
identical to the printed textjournals and other publicationsthree-dimensional objectscorrespondence regarding permission to publish or reproduce
Hugo's workunannotated books
Literary manuscripts were counted and listed by number of pages;
all other series were counted and listed by number of items.
Separated Material: Reels 12 (both positive and negative), comprised of
administrative correspondence from Hugo's chairmanship of the University of
Montana Creative Writing Program and as faculty member, was transferred to the
University of Montana (Missoula) Archives, January 2019 along with the
originals (box 21 of accession 3655-001) from which they were filmed.
