      <head>Historical Note</head>
<p>The Hinckley Institute of Politics was established on May 10, 1965 through a bequest by Robert H. Hinckley and the Edward J. Noble Foundation in order to implement Hinckley's conviction that college students should be instilled with respect for politicians and the political process and that they should be involved in practical politics. Robert H. Hinckley's political career included representing Sanpete County in the Utah State Legislature; serving as mayor of Mount Pleasant, Utah; and being Chairman of the Civil Aereonautics Authority, Assistant Secretary of Commerce, and Director of Contract Settlement in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Administration. The Hinckley Institute of Politics fulfilled its mission by engaging students in the political process through courses; political forums; internships on local, national, and international levels; and scholarships.</p>
<p> J.D. Williams served as the first director of the Institute from 1965 until 1975. Williams had a distinguished career as a professor of political science, from 1952 until his retirement in 1992, which included being named University Professor for the academic year 1985-1986. He was a liberal fire-brand in conservative Utah who ran unsuccessfully for the United States Senate in 1968, lost a campaign for the Utah State House of Representatives in 1976, and advocated for the impeachments of both Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.</p>
<p>The second director of the Institute was R. J. Snow, associate professor of political science, who served simultaneously as the director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics and as Vice President for University Relations From 1975 until he left the latter position in 1984. He formally resigned as director of the Hinckley Institute in 1985.</p>
<p> Ted L. Wilson served as the third director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics from 1985 until 2003. Prior to becoming director, he was appointed as an administrative assistant to Congressman Wayne Owens (D-Utah) in 1973, appointed as the director of the Department of Social Services in Salt Lake County in 1975, and was the mayor of Salt Lake City from 1976 to 1985. He also ran unsuccessfully against Orrin Hatch for United States Senate in 1982. He accepted the position of the director of the Hinckley Institute in 1985. In 1988 he took a leave of absence to run for Governor of Utah, but lost to Norm Bangerter. Ted Wilson retired from the directorship in 2003 and was awarded emeritus status in political science.</p>

Wood, director of the Bureau of Collegiate Educational Research at Columbia University, who was his longtime friend and colleague. One file of correspondence is from Bae Gardner who acted as the assistant director of the Hinckley Institute from 1976 to 1990. Other records in this series include agendas, minutes, and reports from the Institute's Advisory Board, Board of Directors, and Governing Committee; programs sponsored by the Hinckley Institute such as <emph render="doublequote">Coffee and Politics</emph> and <emph render="doublequote">Books and Banter.</emph> The internships and scholarship programs covered by the collection include the Abrelia Clarissa Hinckley Graduate Scholarship, the Brockbank Enrichment Grant, the Robert A.
