James Blaine Yule was born on February 21, 1884. He studied engineering at the University of Montana in Missoula,
though he returned to the family farm before graduating. Yule began working for the
Forest Service in 1911 as a forest ranger and transferred to the division of
engineering in 1917. He pioneered the development of aerial photography and
photogrammetry, both used to speed up forest mapping. Yule retired on September
1, 1947 as the Chief of Maps and Surveys in the engineering division of Forest
Service Region One.

Yule and his wife Margaret had two daughters, Jamie and Valerie. Yule
died on June 4th, 1957.
