This collection is primarily correspondence to and from Dennis Baird, a University of Idaho professor emeritus and former head of the Library's Reference Department, and analytical reports on national forests and environmental policies in Idaho by the Sierra Club and other conservation groups. There are also materials on the Sierra Club, legislation and policies, and documents on wilderness and national forest protection efforts.

The Idaho Environmental Council, Bureau of Land Management, and Department of Agriculture Forest Service are also heavily present in this collection through reports and correspondence. Area specific projects often relate to timber sales, roadless areas, and other land management policies that environmental groups were trying to oppose for forest preservation. Most projects that Dennis Baird was involved in were with the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, which was closest to his home in Moscow, Idaho.

There are also contributions by Charles Yoder, who donated a portion of the collection in 1988 on The Northern Rockies Chapter's Bureau of Land Management Issue Coordinator, and Ronald E. Wise's Hell Canyon National Recreation Area work through Dennis Baird's donations. Many of the efforts that the Sierra Club and Dennis Baird took on were focused on forest preservation by fighting against timber sales and road building in national forests, maintaining and lobbying for land designated as wilderness areas, and other environmental preservation activities like wildlife populations, water quality regulations, and the promotion of environmental awareness.

The Sierra Club is the oldest, largest, and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States. Since it was founded in 1892 by John Muir, the Sierra Club has been working to protect communities, wild places, and the planet itself. The Sierra Club has helped to establish many National Parks and a National Wilderness Preservation System. The Sierra Club is divided into many regional chapters and those chapters are further separated into individual groups that focus on issues in their local area. The Northern Rockies Chapter of the Sierra Club is concerned with issues involving all of Idaho and eastern Washington. It is composed of five groups with the Middle Snake Groups located in Boise, Idaho; the Eastern Idaho Group in Pocatello, Idaho; the Sawtooth Group in Twin Falls, Idaho; the Upper Columbia River Group based out of Spokane, Washington; and the Palouse Group located in Moscow, Idaho. The Palouse Group encompasses central Idaho and southeastern Washington.
