The records of the Guernsey-Newton Company, insurance general agents
of Spokane, Washington, are a group of papers valuable as a source for data
illustrative of the social history of the Inland Empire during the 1920s. The
collection is primarily composed of the reporting forms compiled by local
agents, under Guernsey-Newton supervision, for the determination of rates in
insuring fire, automotive, liability, workmen's compensation and other risks.
About 4,000 cases or policies are contained in the collection and most of these
are written on two companies--the Maryland Casualty Company, Baltimore,
Maryland, and the Pacific States Fire Insurance Company of Portland, Oregon.
Individual cases are reported on forms having 40 to 60 entries apiece, totaling
approximately 200,000 items of data about homes, employment, incomes and
general living conditions in the Spokane area and much of eastern Washington,
Idaho and Montana.
