Colonel Joseph Benjamin Pate (1879-1964) was born in Maryville, Tennessee and educated at Maryville College. He attended and graduated from the United States Infantry and Cavalry School and the Command and General Staff School, both in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and the Army War College in Washington, D.C.

From 1906-1917 he was an officer with the Philippine Constabulary. During World War I he was an infantry major, 157th Infantry Division, 4th French Army.

Between 1936 and 1941 he was a military attaché in Central America, Venezuela and Columbia, and in 1941-1942 was senior member of the Neutral Military Observer Mission in connection with the Ecuador-Peru boundary dispute.

The collection contains biographical files, photographs, a Philippine Constabulary officer list, diaries and mementoes.

There are a total of fifty-two diaries that make up the bulk of the collection. They are informative, covering Pate's youth and his years serving in the United States military. The collection contains diaries from 1908-1914; 1916-1918; 1927-1952; 1954-1964.
