CenterJohn J. Bonica (1917-1994) was a professor and founding chairman for
the University of Washington Department of Anesthesiology. Of the 41 books
Bonica wrote and edited, his most well-known contribution to the medical field
being the second edition of The Management of Pain
(1990). The majority of his publications focused on pain research and
therapy.
Emigrating from Filicudi, Italy in 1928, Bonica received his
Bachelor’s degree from New York University (1938) and his medical degree from
Marquette University (1942). While attending medical school, Bonica was a world
champion light heavyweight wrestler, going by the name Johnny “Bull” Walker
(1941). Shortly after graduating, Bonica married Emma Louise Baldetti
(1942).
At St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York, Bonica specialized in
anesthesiology. During World War II, he led the anesthesiology section at the
Madigan Army Hospital in Fort Lewis, Washington. After the war, Bonica worked
at Tacoma General and Pierce hospitals as the Chief of Anesthesia. He began
teaching anatomy at the University of Washington in 1948 and anesthesiology in
1955. In recognition of Bonica and Baldetti’s contributions, the University of
Washington established an endowed professorship in their name.
