Charles Israel O'Neil was born in Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, on February 18, 1869. He moved
to Montana in 1891 and obtained a job in the retail lumber yard of Dubach Lumber
Company in Monarch, Montana. In 1894, he went to Kalispell, Montana, and managed the
retail division of the Butte and Montana Commercial Company; shortly thereafter he
purchased the lumber yard of the company and went into business as the O'Neil Lumber
Company. His co-owners were James Byrne and C.D. O'Neil. He obtained interest in the
Northwestern Lumber Company of Kalispell, Dawson Lumber Company of Libby, Montana,
and Bryne and O'Neil Lumber Company of Great Falls, Montana, in addition to the
O'Neil Lumber Company of Kalispell and its subsidiary yards in Havre and other
locations.

He and his wife, Kathryn, would have five children while living in Montana. The family relocated to California sometime before 1920. A conservationist, O’Neil disposed of his mill operations and placed his money in standing timber. Charles O’Neil passed away on September 28, 1957 in Los Angeles, California.
