Biographical Note:

A. Grace Johnson joined the faculty of Oregon Agricultural College as an Instructor of Domestic Science in 1915. In 1918, she was promoted to Professor and Head of the Department of Household Administration, a position she held until 1931. During the 1931-1932 academic year, she served as Acting Dean of the School of Home Economics while Dean Ava Milam was on sabbatical leave. Johnson was a pioneer in home management house work and supervised the home economics students who lived in the College's home management houses. She was also an expert on individual and family budgeting and account keeping.

Alma Grace Johnson was born January 9, 1878 in Indiana. She attended Purdue University for one year and then completed her BS at Columbia University in 1915. She returned to Columbia to complete her MA in 1926. Johnson died suddenly on April 12, 1933 in Salt Lake City where she was visiting friends; she had been on sabbatical leave during the 1932-1933 academic year.

The A. Grace Johnson Collection consists of bulletins, circulars, and manuals assembled by Johnson to support her teaching and study in household administration. The publications address family budgets, thrift education, and the tracking of household expenses; several of the publications include annotations by Johnson. The materials were published by Cornell University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the American Home Economics Association as well as banks and businesses.

The collection also includes <extref role="text/html" show="new" actuate="onrequest" href="http://hdl.handle.net/1957/16752">Extension Bulletin 313,
Kitchen Arrangement
</extref>, written by Johnson in 1920, as well as drawings for a barrel system for hot and cold water in the kitchen published by the Oregon Agricultural College Extension Service in 1922.

An
O.S.C. Student Account Book
for documenting expenditures, published by the Co-op. Book Store, is part of the collection. It is partially completed, perhaps as a class assignment for the Household Management course (HAd 340) in spring 1933.
