Mary Margaret Harding (1860-1933) was born in Indiana to William and Mary (Sering) Harding. She married John L. Metsker (1860-1950), also of Indiana, circa 1884. They settled in Whitman County, Washington, in the Pullman area, where they engaged in farming and livestock operations, including the livestock firm Metsker and Klemgard. Mary was a teacher in local rural schools, and was active in the Rebekahs, a fraternal organization, and other community groups, including a sewing club.
This collection consists of a single item, a bound volume including a diary maintained by Mary Metsker from 1889 to 1894. In brief entries, she recorded daily activities, including her work as a teacher, domestic chores, visits, and events at the Metsker home and farm properties. Other pages of the volume contain handwritten songs, poems, notes, and recipes. Prior to Mrs. Metsker using the volume as a diary, it was used as a register for the Hotel Excelsior.
