William James, 1842-1910, is a noted psychologist and philosopher. The album was apparently a gift from him to Pauline Goldmark. James did visit the Banff area at least once, spending several days there in early 1898, so it is possible he acquired the images then. The handwritten identifiers on the photographs do not match James' handwriting, nor was he known to do photography, so presumably these were custom or commercially produced and bound, and later gifted.
