Maurice Warshaw was born in 1898 in Dubossar, Ukraine, to Rivka Rample and Nathan Warshaw. He was named Samuel Warshawsky at birth, and called "Little Mieche" or "Little Mouse." His father was a Jewish businessman and community leader. The family immigrated around 1906 to escape the wave of pogroms, or violent anti-Jewish riots, that occurred between 1903 and 1906 in the Russian empire. After immigration, Mieche Warshawsky was renamed Maurice Warshaw.

When Maurice Warshaw was a teenager, the family moved from Pennsylvania to the Jewish colony of Clarion near Gunnison, Utah. After two years, the family settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. In the 1930s, Maurice Warshaw opened the Grand Central Market, a grocery store located at Ninth South and Main Street. The business became a chain, Grand Central Inc., and spread throughout Utah and into Idaho and Wyoming.

Warshaw was involved in local, national, and international humanitarian and civic projects, including the international aid organizations CARE and UNICEF. Warshaw was given a doctor of humanities degree from Westminster College in 1970. Maurice Warshaw died on 1979 January 5.
