The Cheney State Normal School Student Directory for 1890-1912 was compiled in 1924 to preserve a record of students who attended school prior to the fire of 1912, which burned much of the evidence up to that point. The directory contains record of degrees earned and years attended.

    <bioghist encodinganalog="5451_">

Cheney State Normal School was established in the summer of 1890 as the first teacher's college in Washington State. The school occupied the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy building until the building burned down a year later. The new building that was constructed in 1896 burned down in 1912, which caused the destruction of most of the school's records. The Student Directory for 1890-1912 was an attempt to transcribe a piece of that history during a time when the school was working to build a sense of tradition and continuity.
